Sadulshahar is a town in Sri Ganganagar district in Rajasthan. The place is situated in Sadulshahar Tehsil and belongs to Bikaner Division. Sadulshahar is a sub district and a municipality.

History of Sadulshahar

About SadulshaharSadulshahar is named after Maharaja Sadul Singh, who established the town. He was son of Maharaja Ganga Singh. It was a part of Bikaner State before independence and under the supervision Maharaja Ganga Singh, who was just 19 years old. In 1899, when the British refused water rights from the Satlej River in Punjab, the town had to witness the great famine.

So, Maharaja Ganga Singh built a canal in his State raising a loan of 15 million for his irrigation scheme. The construction of the canal was started in 1921 and was completed in 1927. The Gang canal, which was one of the longest concrete lined canals in the world, changed the desert’s face around Ganganagar. The canal brought excess water from Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the region. Thus the effort of Maharaja Ganga Singh transformed the desert land to a lush green town.

The geo-coordinate of Sadulsahar is latitude 29.92 and longitude is 74.17. Sadulshahar tehsil is surrounded by the Fazila at north side. The east side is connected to Hanumangarh district, which is little far from the Padampur Tehsil in the southwest region. The western side of the tehsil is linked with Ganganagar tehsil. The nearby cities of Sadulshahar are Abohar, Ganganagar, Hanumangarh, Sangaria, Mandi Dabwali, Fazilka, Ellenabad, Karanpur, Raman, Rania, Jaitu, Sardulgarh, Malout, Sangat, Pilibanga, Gidderbaha etc. Even though India and Pakistan do not share a good relationship, Sadulshahar, the town situated on the border, is a peaceful town.

Sadulshahar experiences an extreme climate. The town is very hot in summer with temperature of 50 degree Celsius. But, the temperature almost dips below 0 degree Celsius in winter.

Culture of Sadulshahar

Majority of population in Sadulshahar town are Hindus and Sikhs. Only a few people of other communities stay here. The village people are generally simple. The elder males wear the traditional dress of Kurta – Pyjama, while the elder females wear sari and Punjabi suits. But, the youngsters like to wear modern costumes like jeans and T-shirt. People in the town speak various languages like Rajasthani, Hindi, Seraiki and Punjabi.

Sadulshahar is a great agriculture based industry center in Rajasthan. Agriculture is the main source of economy in Sadulshahar. Cotton, wheat, citrus fruit and mustard are the main crops here. Sadulshahar is famous for Kinnu, which is a variant of orange. The Gang Canal, which was built by Maharaja Ganga Singh in 1927, turned this land into greenish and cherished the agriculture sector in the region. These crops developed the industry in Sadulshahar town.
